What's Now and Next in Sustainability for the Pet Industry – this is the key question leading you through the programme. Learn more about structure, format and features of this conference.
Elliott Harris is the former United Nations assistant secretary-general for economic development and chief economist who has been closely involved in the design of the global Sustainable Development Agenda and the policies aimed at reducing poverty, generating more equitable social outcomes and environmental sustainability, and creating resilient and sustainable development. He brings this unparalleled expertise into the analysis of what's happening now and what's ahead in the global economic landscape. In his keynote he will highlight how pet businesses and policy can collaborate today for a more sustainable future and how the UN SDGs can help to navigate.
In her presentation Jana Rude will put the spotlight on the behaviour of pet parents and how differently they handle sustainability issues. Jana will show the importance of understanding the diverse consumer types for the pet care industry's sustainability efforts in 2026, as each segment is influencing green trends differently – from driving demand for eco-friendly pet food to shaping expectations around packaging and corporate responsibility. Her analysis will bring each Green Pet Parent profile to life with examples of successful pet care initiatives tailored to different consumer types, and outline practical steps businesses can take to engage each group and gain an early-mover advantage. Look forward to a fact-based, practical insight into pet parents' behaviour.

How sustainable is the pet industry – and how can it become even more so? Antwerp Management School (AMS) invites you to join an interactive exploration of sustainability in the pet industry, reflecting on its past, present, and future. In this session you will analyse and exchange on key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping sustainability in the sector. Experts, manufacturers, and retailers will engage in a dynamic discussion on how the industry has evolved, where it stands today, and what innovations and collaborations are needed to accelerate the transition toward a more responsible future. Through best-practice examples, data insights, and dialogue, Dr. Jan Beyne aims to inspire actionable strategies that integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability across the entire pet value chain. You will gain a better understanding of what sustainable transformation looks like in practice – and how to translate ambition into measurable impact.
The afternoon starts with an inspiring project: For more than 30 years, Scott's primary case study has been the aquarium fishery of Brazil's Rio Negro. His work has helped demonstrate how a well-managed, community-based pet trade can deliver substantial and measurable benefits to rural and Indigenous riverine communities while simultaneously protecting vast regions of exceptional biological importance. Learn more about a sustainable project that supports all 17 SDGs.
Are you ready for the presentation of the three finalists for the first Interzoo Sustainability Award? Look forward to three inspiring and engaging presentations on top sustainable solutions within the pet industry. Following the finalists' live pitches, be ready to vote together with the jury for the winner! Finalists will be announced in April.
Networking & refreshments
What can the industry do together for a more sustainable future? Often collaboration is the only way to overcome challenges or to develop solutions for current problems. Our speaker will highlight ways to overcome barriers and to jointly define roadmaps to a more sustainable future.
Besides an intrinsic motivation, regulations and customer demand are the two main reasons for companies to work on their sustainable footprint. Our panel will discuss within the current and future regulatory framework what could and should be done for a sustainable future of the pet industry. The panel is summarizing major aspects of today's presentations and will give an outlook how the future could look like.
